My Grandad bought Bottom Farm back in the 1950's to join onto land already owned on Barnes Drove, and set his young workforce (including my dad and uncles) to work. With a David Brown 30D, a grey Fergie soon to follow, and Tinker the horse, he was soon looking to expand further.
Fordson Super Majors, driven by Dad and Uncle Tom, were soon taking over the work through the 1960's and were a common sight around Bourne, carting pig manure from T.W. Mays piggeries.
As the farm grew, so did the tractors. But the workforce shrank and the crops changed. Fordson's were changed for a Ford 6600 and a couple of Zetor's. Dad sold the potato quota and used the money to pay for a new grain store and barley crops weren't good enough, so with the help of better herbicides, more wheat was grown with peas and sugar beet still being grown as break crops.
I started helping out as soon as I was big enough to, learning to drive tractors on the now more modern Case International 895 and 4240. I'm still driving them now.....
